I discovered the song, “Philosophia“, back in 2007. This was when Apple’s iTunes would give away a free song download every week. I didn’t know the band, The Guggenheim Grotto, or any of their music, but this song hooked me on the first listen.
What I love about it is the way the music and vocals and lyrics blend so effortlessly into this dream-like trance. The keyboards and guitar are almost hypnotic. In fact, this is a song that will make me stop what I’m doing to listen.
The lyrics, however, are what I really love. To me, they talk about youthful idealism, learning hard truths, and that art is in the eye of the beholder. And not just art like you see in a gallery or museum, but also individuals, people. We are all works of art.
When we’re young we set our hearts upon some beautiful idea
Maybe something from a holy book or French philosophia
Upon the thoughts of better men than us we swear by and decree a
Perfect way to end the war of ways the only way to be a…
Work of art, oh to be a work of art
But in time a thought comes tugging on the sleeve edge of our minds
Perhaps no perfect way exists at all, just many different kinds
Oh but if it’s just a thing of taste then everything unwinds
For without an absolute how can the absolute define…
A work of art, oh to be a work of art
Let me know your thoughts after listening to this song.

Not heard of this band but I like the song. My husband has a subscription to Apple Music, he downloads a lot but as a consequence we have found new music.
I’m glad you like it, Sheree! It’s always fun to find new music. I’m an Apple Music subscriber, as well, and I like to explore the playlists from around the world.
