This is an intuitive abstract I painted recently. I had the color red on my mind and thought it would be fun to see where it led me. I wasn’t aiming for anything particular. Just a little abstract practice.
I started off with some luminescent acrylic paints and acrylic markers on a piece of 16-inch by 20-inch unstretched canvas. From there, I used palette knives and brushes, letting the tools lead me. I finished it with a coating of red which I then thinned out by rubbing it with paper towels.
Afterwards, I felt this looked like two people meeting, the red reflecting what they were feeling. It was a fun practice piece and I’d love to read your thoughts.

It’s a fascinating image on first glance there are two people but when looking further I see a third one in-between… Almost invisible, maybe just over hearing the other two. I think they are walking somewhere but they most fascinating detail to me is the concentric circles which seem to be radiating out from the person on the right… Almost like radar searching for a response but the one on the left is encased in the vertical strata, almost conveying that signal is blocked and not received.
Lovely to see your abstract.
Oh, I love that, Morag! It’s always fascinating to paint an intuitive abstract and then receive interesting interpretations from people. I’m so glad you were able to find all these wonderful details…thank you!
You are welcome. I find it fun looking at art but I think each one’s interpretation normally says more to and of the person making the interpretation than the artist.
…Almost like Rorschach’s inkblot….
Now I am wondering what it says to or about me 😂 I might know the answer
Richard, I have to thank you. Your image and discussion of what we see in your image led me to an epiphany which I think is going to be very beneficial in the future!
That’s fantastic, Morag! I’m looking forward to seeing what transpires!
😂me too
A red doll in a black dress and a pink doll wearing a red cap, both dancing.
Reading this made me smile, Nusrat! 🙂
My first impression was of two jellybean people conversing at a cocktail party.
I like that, Swabby! Even jellybean people need companionship. 🙂
I can see two people as well, what I find interesting is how the color order is reversed, top to bottom. Not quite sure what it means, just found it fascinating. 💞
It was unintentional, Dawn, but I think it ended up adding some balance to the figures. I’m glad you enjoyed this piece. ♥️
I think the vertical stripes on the left side are a good contrast to the two figures. But I admit my first impression was lava lamp!
LOL! I love that, Audrey! I see that now, as well. 🙂
Two people dancing, yes I can see that too 💃🏼
Wonderful, Wayne! Thanks so much!
I also see two people when I first glanced at the painting. Two people at a night club in the early part of the evening. Two people draw to each other, yet a bit of hesitancy as they are trying to get a sense of the other’s intentions.
Oh, that’s excellent, Jasper! Thank you!
I see two persons two!
Love the use of the warm colour with the cooler blue tone!
And the white circles in the background really add something special to the drawing!not sure how you made that magic happen!
Great one 🙂
Thank you so much, Andrea! I’m glad you enjoyed this. ♥️
Two people waiting for the underground train.
Mind the gap! 🙂
Fun experiment, Richard.
It was, Pat. 🙂
