With summer wrapping up here in the Northern Hemisphere, I thought I’d try to paint a summer image that will carry me through to next spring. I wanted to see something bright, luminescent, and cheerful.
I didn’t start with a particular vision in mind, just a handful of colors. Using brushes, palette knives, and a bit of balled-up paper towel, I began layering acrylics onto a 12 inch by 16 inch medium grain canvas sheet.
I feel intuitive painting is fun. There’s no set goal or concrete image, it’s just me and the paint playing around to see what happens.
Let me know what you think of this piece.

The colours are vibrant and blended with darker shades which hints at mystery and the textures of the brush strokes first remind me of palm trees but as I connect with the colours I think to myself, some of the brush strokes look like feathers. It is pleasing and fascinating. It feels feminine and powerful. That’s a painting destined for someone’s wall!
Thank you so much for the kind words, Morag. I like how you describe it as “feminine and powerful”. Perhaps I should rename it to that! 🙂
It was a fun piece to work on, and I’m glad you enjoyed how it came together.
Yes are welcome 👋
This gives me a tropical sunset vibe. 💞
Mission accomplished! Thanks, Dawn! 🙂
…wanted to capture that vibrant, warm energy before the cool air settles in! 🎨🌺 Abstract Expressionism is such a great way to lock in those tropical summer vibes through bold colors and pure emotion. Absolutely love this idea—a great piece to warm up the room through the colder months! ☀️🖌️✨
I’m glad you understand, Safia! Thank you so much for the kind words. 🙂
Two palm trees and someone enjoying sitting beneath them.
Shades of early autumn are also visible.
A beautiful painting, Richard.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this painting, Nusrat. 🙂
Lovely painting, Richard.
Thank you, Pat!
I love it–it reminds me of someone sitting among the mature blooms and foliage of late summer/early autumn.
I’m so glad, Miss Parker. 🙂
The first thing I saw were palm trees.
But looking more at it, it could also be disco lights in the night on the beach!
Not something I have attended in a while, because whether I am sleeping or not, I am in bed by 9 🤭
But now I want to…one last summer night before the actual cold starts!
Love the feeling your paiting gives me! 🙂🙂
Funny thing is, the first thing I noticed as I was painting this was the palm fronds. From there, it began to really take shape for me.
And I agree, it looks like a festive nighttime party on the sand. 🍹
I’m glad you enjoyed this, Andrea. Thank you!
That really hits the spot Richard
That makes me happy, Sheree. ♥️
😎
I have been looking for a course which teaches me not painting but how to understand and appreciate painting. However, I have not found any course as such. So I remain as less knowledgeable as before. But l love to stare at a painting without understanding the meaning. You can say I am fascinated by art and colour. Your painting makes me think of two trees and a lot of movement.I don’t know whether that makes sense.
That makes complete sense, my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed this piece.
If you can’t find a course on appreciating paintings, you can check on YouTube. I’ve seen a few that go through some of the classic paintings and explain some of the interesting details.
I like that the colors are shaded. It gives the appearance of being beneath the canopy of a jungle.
Thanks, Swabby. I was thinking that, as well. 🙂
