An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

A Little Abstract Expressionism – Zinnia

Posted on 2026-09-09 By RB

After posting the photo of my late-season Zinnia last week, it’s been on my mind. Something about the colors of the flower petals stuck in my head.

I wasn’t interested in recreating the flower itself, but I wanted to try and capture the shades of pink and red that were layered on each petal. To do this, I used Rose, Pink, Neon Pink, and an Iridescent Pink.

The flower is a little sloppy, but in my defense, I wasn’t even looking at the photo. I was going from memory and trying to get it done in an hour.

I think it was able to get the colors close to the real thing. What do you think?

You’re too kind, Morag. It was more of an experiment, but I felt the need to play around with these colors. I’m so glad you enjoyed this. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love these vibrant pinks, Richard! Capturing those layers from memory in an hour is super impressive, definitely not sloppy. Iโ€™m currently stuck waiting around for my cabinet refacers to finish up, so seeing this bold zinnia was the perfect bright spot in my day!

Looking at the pic without reading the post I thought it was real and wondered why have you posted the pic again. And then I thought perhaps the colour of the flower was a bit different that’s why ๐Ÿ˜…

Hah! This is totally my style!
A dark background and popping colours on the inside! ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

The shading of the pink looks great. I can only imagine how hard that is when not doing digitally ๐Ÿซช i am spoiled with a great little digitally tool called โ€œclipping maskโ€.
Also love how the tiny yellow โ€œflowersโ€ on the inside are popping!

That means a lot to me, Andrea! Thank you!

The pink shading was the hard part. I was trying to get those little slivers just right. And the yellow bits were actually the fun part! ๐Ÿ™‚

I imagine it is extremely difficult to reproduce the delicate, beautiful hues of flowers, but I feel your painting captures them magnificently.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’
