When we moved into our house nearly 30 years ago, the previous owners left us a cluster of Jewel of Thailand plants in a small flower bed. Jewel of Thailand are related to ginger, although these aren’t edible. However, they have wide, green leaves and the most beautiful flowers. Click the image for a larger view.
Have you seen a Jewel of Thailand before?

Thank you for posting this. It reminds me of my step-mom who was born and raised in Thailand. She had a patch of these flowers in her garden along with southeast Asia squash.
It made me incredibly happy to read this, Swabby. Thank you for sharing your memory.
Wow, what a beautiful gem the previous owners left🙂
And still going strong after 3 decades!
I have never seen one before, but if I ever go to a flower garden, I will definitely look for them !
I’m curious if they may be in one of your local botanical gardens. I hope you get a chance to see one in person, Andrea. The photo doesn’t do them justice.
Beautiful! This plant is new to me, which is surprising since it’s apparently hardy to Zone 7 or 8. It does look tropical, though.
They also apparently prefer partial shade, but ours are currently growing – and flourishing – in direct sunlight and high temperatures. Perhaps they are adaptable to different situations. You should see if they’ll grow in your garden, Audrey. 🙂
I’ve never seen them before, they are gorgeous! 💞
So glad you enjoyed this flower, Dawn. 🙂
Happy Smile

Wow, I have not seen the jewel of Thailand before. Such a pretty flower.🌸
I’m glad you enjoy it, Morag. It only flowers for a few months in the summer, then dies off once the weather cools.
Beautiful clicks!
Thank you.
Welcome, RB
Simply wonderful ❣️
I’m so glad you like it, Luisa! ♥️
🍀It was a joy!
Beautiful flower,Richard
Haven’t seen it,nor heard this name.
I’m glad I introduced you to something new, Nusrat. 🙂
I won’t see one where I live unless it doubles as a house plant.
When I visited in Cuba for the first time I was surprised how much of the outdoor vegetation were house plants that I have.
That’s interesting, Jasper. I imagine the Jewel of Thailand would need to be indoors up where you live.
No, no, the Jewel of Thailand would only live here as a house plant if it could. I figure only tropical plants that thrive under low light would work as a house plant since indoor lighting pales in comparison with sunshine.
These actually prefer partial shade and shadier spots, although ours are currently getting direct sunlight. You might want to give them a try and see what happens.
No, I have not. But it’s very beautiful.
I’m glad I was able to show you a new flower! 🙂
Those are gorgeous and I’ve never seen them before – nice leave!
Thank you, Sheree! Glad you like the flower.
No, it’s new to me.
I’m glad I was able to introduce you! 🙂
