Poetry Moment – Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Posted on 2026-07-13 By RB

Did you know that, on average, dogs can sleep 12 to 14 hours a day? Senior dogs and puppies can get as much as 20 hours of sleep in a day. That’s a lot of downtime.

My two older mutts, Peppa and Chili, probably lean to the higher end of that. Bubbie, on the other hand, has far too much energy. He goes and goes and goes until he crashes. But at the slightest noise, he’s up and ready to go.

After a long walk in the woods and

an hour of play in the yard

sleeping dogs lie

on the sofa, on the floor, stretched out in front of

a fan.

As long as it’s cool, comfortable, and there’s

a pillow nearby.

They sleep and dream, eyes flickering behind closed lids and

paws twitching as they chase each other and

continue their play in dreamland.

Yes, I’m jealous of their ability to sleep for most of the day. How about you?

Your pack is so adorable! 💞 I find my tiptoeing around my oldest, Rayna. At 14 she is still on high alert for any movent (she’s a nervous Nellie), and it’s only the last few months that she’ll actually stay laying down and allow me to walk past. My younger, Tank, at 7 is the biggest couch potato I know. Yes, I’m envious!

I had a feeling you’d relate to this, Dawn. I hope your two aren’t quite the snorers mine are (oh, they wake me up at night when their snores sync up!).

Please give them both some belly pats from me. 🐾

I have a cat that out-snores everyone in the house, lol. Luckily he doesn’t sleep in bed with me. Belly pats shared 💞

Dogs and cats sleep their lives away. I admire their ease in falling asleep. However, I would not want to sleep as long as they do. I admit to an abiding fear of missing out. There are so many things to take in, study, and enjoy that would be missed during long sleeps.

Funny you mention that, Swabby. I feel the same. I like a good nap every now and then, but then I worry that I’m missing out on accomplishing something, finishing a painting, drafting a story. Still, it would be nice to have no responsibility except chasing squirrels out of the vegetable garden and sleeping it off later. 🙂

I tend to fall asleep in moving vehicles, so last time I was on a plane, I asked my other half to take a picture of me in case I fall asleep.
Expecting to be a cute and serene image.
My drooling mouth and neck ar such an odd angle it looked like I was in the midst of an exorcism, were very far from that 🤭

Dogs, however, look so adorable while sleeping!
    And these three prove it!
Your poem describes it perfectly! 🙂

LOL! Oh, you made me spit tea across the table reading this! 🤣 You should provide an illustrated version of that photo, Andrea. And sell it as a sticker! 🤣

Thank you so much for the kind words. Sometimes watching them makes me start to yawn. Unfortunately, I don’t have as much free time as they do. 🐾

    Lovely poem, Richard
I always wonder whether animals dream.

Thank you, Nusrat. I’m sure they do. Mine bark and whine when they sleep, and many times I see their feet twitching as if they are running and playing. It’s a simple life they lead. 🙂

Thank you, Pat. It’s fun to watch them dream and wonder what they’re chasing. 🙂
