An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

Poetry Moment – Chives

Posted on 2026-04-03 By RB

I often trim the emerging flower buds from my herb plants to prevent them from going to seed. The thought is that once they go to seed, the quality of the herb declines. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true, so this year I’ve been letting them flower.

My chives are the first to bloom. I wasn’t expecting the tiny flowers to be so beautiful. It caught me off guard and I actually said, “Wow!” when I saw them for the first time this week.

A burst of lavender like

a star fallen to Earth. I

watch as the stalk slowly

sways in the warm breeze and

wonder at the beauty of it all.

What do you think of these chive flowers?

RB

Your chive bloom is pretty. I am reminded of feral chives that grow in the grove of trees near my home.

That’s scientifically true as once a flower blooms the plant tries to give it’s all in making it bloom!
Same here to make the herb more potent… I follow the same and I mainly grow microgreens 😇
    But… anyway it’s a beautiful bloom💜
    Have an awesome weekend!

Lavender is one of the prettiest colours in my opinion.
I enjoy cooler tones usually, but this one actually makes you feel warm and peaceful!
And your poem describes that beautifully 🙂
