An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

Introducing Bubbie

Posted on 2026-02-18 By RB

So, we adopted another rescue mutt.

Meet Bubbie, a 14 month old Staffordshire Terrier/Labrador mix we met at the local animal shelter. He’s 58 pounds of affection, loves curling up with us on the sofa, and adores his new pack mates. It seems he has a hard time choosing who he likes better, Peppa or Chili, and he takes turns following them around and trying to snuggle up with them.

He’s only been with us a few days now, but he’s settling in quite well. Of course, he’s still testing boundaries (like jumping up on the bed, which is a no-no) and being the annoying little brother to his older sisters. They, in turn, are being very patient with him…only a few little growls to warn him off, but no teeth snapping or escalations.

Unfortunately, Bubbie’s previous owner didn’t take care of him properly, so he is heart worm positive. Since we adopted him ‘as is’, the shelter is kindly paying for his medical treatment.

The hard part will be afterward – once he gets the two injections to kill off the heart worms, he has to be on ‘no activity’ for nearly two months. No walks, no playing, no jumping. We have to keep him in a dog crate or on a leash at all times. The reason is that as the worms begin to die off, small pieces of them break off into his bloodstream. If they are in the larger arteries, that’s fine. They’ll decompose and all is well. But if he runs around and gets his heart pumping hard, that can push pieces of the worms into the smaller veins in his lungs and cause an embolism.

It’s going to be a tough couple of months for him, but once it’s over with he’s going to have a blast playing with Peppa and Chili and catching up on all the adventures he missed while on restrictions.

Oh, thank you, Aparna! Yes, he’d in good health and should come through this process just fine. I, on the other hand, will be a nervous wreck until he’s better.

Welcome to your new pack, Bubbie! What a handsome baby! I hope the enforced ‘quiet’ isn’t too hard on all of you.

Thank you, Dawn! I know you can appreciate how excited we all are to have him in the family. 🙂
The heart worm journey will be tough, but we have a lot of support from the animal shelter and our vet’s office, so I’m hoping it’ll pass smoothly. Fingers crossed (paws, too!).

The heartworm situation will be touch and go, but most dogs survive the healing process. I hope Bubbie has a long, happy life.

Fingers crossed, Swabby. He has a 90% chance of complete recovery, so we’re going to follow the doctor’s orders and keep him calm and well-loved.
Thank you for the well wishes, my friend.

Adopting a rescue dog is noble and a commitment. Kudos to you Richard.
My solemn had two rescue dogs before he had children. The Corgie was very protective of their first child, but wouldn’t let him pet him. The Jack Russel was jealous of their son as an infant and couldn’t be trusted.
I took in the Jack Russel for over a year before an adoption could be arranged for the Jack Russel.

Some rescue dog have challenges from their past that require special care to address it.

      Thank you, Jasper.
All three of ours have their issues, but like humans, they are all unique and special.

What an absolute GEM of a dog! And Bubbie is such a cool name!
I have a little bit of experience with Staffies. THey have the soulful eyes and very playful character. Yet are also super affectionate. I got my face licked many times 😄
Sitting still for him will definitely not be easy.
(Hence why I would choose an English bulldog or Frenchie. Just me and them chilling on the couch 🤭).
Either way, it will be a companion for life! Looking forward to hear more about his progress, with pictures of course 😄

Oh, he’s both a lover boy and a little scrapper, but that fits in well with Peppa and Chili.
      Thanks, Andrea!
