We planned to go to a nearby park for our morning walk with the dogs, but the ranger was late opening the gate. So instead, I drove us down to a nearby landing to look out of Lake Jackson as the sun came up. It was a chilly morning, and the water was warmer than the air, so there was a mist hovering over the water and drifting into the surrounding trees.
Ethereal mist rising from the surface
of the black water
Birds linger, small ripples mar the
mirror reflecting the sky
In the distance, it weaves into the tree
branches like gossamer
Softening the view and lingering
in my dreams.
Have you seen a dreamlike landscape lately? Or is that just something us early-birds get to enjoy? 🙂

Stunning photo and poem, Richard! 💞 I love those magical moments! 💞
I appreciate the kindness, Dawn. 🙂
Lovely poem. Your words draw a photo on they’re own.
Thank you for the kindness! I appreciate it.
Why are typos my superpower? 😞
What a lovely photo and poem capturing a beautiful scene 👌 . There’s such beauty and ethereal states early morning and evening here in Scotland. I found it mindboggling. It’s because the dawn and dusk held suspended in time … Something that the Scottish call gloaming and it’s a very beautiful time and place. Sorry I keep going on about Scotland 🤭
LOL, no need to apologize. My wife heritage is Scottish (and I’m half Irish), so I can appreciate your love for your adopted home.
I’ve heard the word ‘gloaming’, but I don’t think I ever really knew the meaning, so thank you for that.
I’m glad you enjoyed the photo and poem, my friend.
Cool 👌
how wonderful! mist is always great at how it places a veil over a scene. well captured!!
Thank you, Linda! It was a lovely scene. I wish I had also taken a photo of my two dogs looking out the rear window. Maybe next time. 🙂
Your misty vision is lovely. Meanwhile, I still await the rare occurrence of hoarfrost forming from fog in a winter morning.
Thank you so much, Swabby. Hoarfrost has such an eerie name. You’ll have to share some photos if it occurs.
I will.
Stunning Richard.
Thanks so much, Wayne! Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely descriptive poem, with more sensory details than your essay contained.
Ha! Thank you, Pat!
Your poem is beautiful and the photo is full of poetry
Thank you for the kind words, Luisa. I’m glad I was able to write something that complimented the photo. 🙂
You’re more than welcome, as always🙏🌷
Definitely one for the early birds Richard. It looked lovely but then I’m wrapped up warmly.
LOL…to each their own! Glad you were still able to enjoy it, Sheree. 🙂
Stepping outside shortly before the sun rises is always an experience that leans towards the etheral. There’s a gentle tension of having arrived at a moment as something fresh and momentos is underway.
Experiencing a moment when all the distractions and psychological noise has not arrived.
It truly is, Jasper. Thank you for stopping by.
It isn’t the “idyllic bight azure sky and water”, but as someone who has lived in gloomy harbour towns mainly, I appreciate this view very much.
There is something mysterious about the fog and slightly murky water. Hence, your poem fits excellently.
I bet the doggos enjoyed it no matter what. And that, probably, is the most important part 😄
Thank you, Andrea! And yes, the pups love those early walks. 🦮
