We had a “weather event” come through this past weekend. A “weather event” seems to be the new nomenclature here for storms. There was a fairly good chance we were going to get some snow, but it ended up being some light sleet and rain. So now it’s just cold and wet out.
Of course, the temperature dropped down into the low 20s, and Monday morning there was a frost covering everything. It was actually nicer than snow. I could still see the grass and leaves, but everything was tinged in white.
A warm fog as I exhale
Like a puff of smoke, tasting of blue ice.
My exposed skin prickles with bumps
And a shiver sparks through my nerve endings.
A faint sheet of white, like splattered paint
Across the grass and fallen leaves.
A frosty morning
Soon to melt away under the rising sun.
I love those cold, quiet mornings, standing outside the back door and enjoying the daybreak. How about you?

There is something magical about it! 💞
As long as it isn’t TOO frosty! 🙂
Yeah, I think we’re still at those levels right now (-3 here currently) and I’m staying inside as much as possible!
Oh, that’s unpleasant. Stay safe and warm!
I’m a winter-loving person, so the answer is easy. Yes, I love frost. I’m especially ecstatic when hoarfrost appears and coats everything with thick, white crunchiness.
“..thick, white crunchiness…” is a perfect description, Swabby. I can enjoy it for short periods, but I’m originally from South Florida and anything below 60 is freezing to me. 🥶
Another lovely poem. Yes I love those cold mornings too. We are experiencing a 40 degree day here on Saturday (Melbourne). Thanks for this atmospheric piece. It’ll cool me down.
Oh, that’s right, you have the opposite season. Hope things cool down a bit for you, mate. And thanks for the kind words.
That sounds great Richard. Very fresh.
Many thanks, Wayne!
My favorite new weather phrase is “atmospheric river”!
Frost is fun because it disappears here once the sun comes out. Only early risers get to see it sparkle!
Oh, that’s another good term, Michelle.
I imagine you have to be quick to catch the frost where you live. Glad you get to see it every once in a while. 🙂
What a perfect reflection…
That beautiful imagery of tasting the blue ice is superb!!!
And I m sure as the sun rises that glistening effect of melting snow must have been mesmerising✨☆
There is a special kind of stillness that you have described for those frost-covered mornings.
Stay warm and blessed
Aparna 💙🌷
Thank you so much, Aparna. I’m glad you enjoyed the imagery…I was proud when I came up with that line. 🙂
Thank you for stopping by!
It’s a pleasure to read your words ☺️✨
Have a blessed weekend ahead 🌷
Rather see frost on the grass but not on my windshield. Although the newer cars do heat up and cool down quicker than older models, so less mandatory scraping until after the defroster has made the job easier and quicker.
Oh, definitely, Pat. I had to pour a pitcher of water on my windshield this past weekend to peel off that light frosting. Luckily, we seem to be having an easier go of it this winter.
I love your poem for bringing back memories of very early childhood. Every year as we approached late fall we would marvel at the “smoke” we could exhale like an adolescent dragon, eager for the day that we could breathe fire like a fearsome dragon.
LOL, for what it’s worth, Jasper, I still imagine myself as a dragon blowing out my smoky breath.
I am very much a morning person!
But… I do tend to sleep better in the winter, so when I can, I’ll stay in.
But a crispy, cold winter morning is definitely good for the spirt (I believe in blood circulation). So your poem fits perfectly! 🙂
Oh, thank you, Andrea! Yes, it’s invigorating in the early morning (I’m up at 5 am every day), but it can be a struggle to crawl out from under the covers. 🙂
I love frost and the way it crunches underfloor and it’s delicate appearance. It’s brisk and bracing chasing cobwebs away from the mind and soul. Pity my lungs don’t get on with the frost otherwise frost would be my friend.
I like your poem. We are also having weird weather here. Have a good day.
Same! That crunchiness is so unique and atmospheric, especially in a rural setting.
Hope your weather improves and thanks for stopping by. 🙂
Thank you, just boggy soggy Scotland with all the rain today 😊
