Well, the drought streak was finally broken yesterday with almost an inch and a half of rain. Not enough to get us caught up to where we should be, but it helped to revive the plants and add to the surrounding lakes and ponds. Luckily, it was a nice, steady, drenching rain that had time to soak in to the soil.
I awoke early to the
soft and ceaseless roar of rain
on the roof.
I could hear it trickling in the downspout outside
my window and heard it ratatat-tat on the
remaining leaves on the trees.
I eased back into the pillow and
pulled the covers up to my chin, smiling
as the sound of the rain serenaded me
back to sleep.
Late night and early morning rain is the best, in my opinion. What do you think?

Brilliant!
Many thanks!
Pleasure!
Oh the earth must have breathed a sigh of relief. Wonderful poem, Richard and so happy you were given a good drink! Hopefully you have more on the horizon. 💞💞💞
Thank you, Dawn. Luckily, we’ve had light rain for the past couple of days now. It’s nice to have all the dust washed away and the plants brightening up a bit before the cold sets in.
💞
Beautiful poem.
Thank you!
I also love the sound of rain.🥰💝💕💕💕
The silver rain illuminated by the lights at the night isalso beautiful😍💞💞💞
That’s a beautiful way to describe it, Hitomi! Thank you for your comment. 🙂
Such rain without severe thunderstorms is rare lately in Nebraska. When generalized rain occurs, it’s a lovely change of pace.
Oh, here’s hoping you get some nice, quiet rainfall (or snowfall) for the foreseeable future.
We may receive a light dusting of snow this weekend. I hope the forecasters are right.
Oh good to hear that the land is getting its hydration finally!
I have always loved rain actually (unless I am driving or walking outside).
But laying in bed, hearing the rain falling down in the morning, is like your poem: perfectly soothing ! 😄
Thanks, Andrea! We’re getting more rain over the next few days. It won’t be enough to break us completely out of the drought, but it’ll help!
Also, I’ve been sleeping very well. 😴
Brilliant Richard, love it. I like the rain to be at night, listening in bed.
Perfect for sleeping! Many thanks, Wayne!
That sounds absolutely lovely, Richard! Your description paints a perfectly cozy picture and I am able to recall a perfect quote that captures the same peaceful, musical quality you described –
“The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night and I love the rain.”
-Langston Hughes

Thanks so much, Aparna! And that is the perfect quote. Thank you for sharing that! 🌦️
Anytime Richard… the poem was beautiful indeed 😊
I love hearing the rains pitter patter..
Such a peaceful sound. Reminds me of the house I grew up in. An old farmhouse with a corrugated iron roof. I always feel so grateful having a nice warm house for shelter. So glad you got your breakthrough rain. 🎉🎉
Oh, rain on a tin roof is a magical sound (I’m sure it’s similar to an iron roof). I used to hear that on my late uncle’s farm on summer nights.
Thanks for stopping by, Morag. 🙂
You are welcome.
Hurray. At least you got rain and now wintry mix or snow, Richard.
Oh, I’m quite happy about that! No need for snow this year!
Since my husband and I are both too old to shovel and there is no one seemingly willing to shovel it for money, I could gladly do without snow. Our housing association has great sidewalk shovelers, but its not always possible to catch them at the right time to inquire if they have a few minutes to shovel our car out after the snow plows block them in
We offer each person more than minimum wage, to try to make it worthwhile transaction.
So sorry to hear that, Pat. I hope your luck improves…or some local shoveler needs some extra shopping cash!
