Poetry Moment – Bruised Sunrise

Posted on 2025-12-01 By RB

I was up early this weekend and had the chance to see a beautiful sunrise as I walked across a mostly empty parking lot. I’m not sure what atmospheric conditions caused the sky and clouds to look this way, but I found it both beautiful and a bit uncomfortable.

The dawn arrived limping over the horizon

Battered, bruised, swaying from some unknown battle

Was it the sun and moon again? Each striving to dominate?

Or was it the stars, so bright and sparkling, like an army of the night

taking sides and throwing themselves into the fray?

The sun soon peeked over the horizon and the wounded sky

was concealed by bright blue and yellow beams

The moon was banished once again and remained hidden until

its adversary dipped over the western edge of the world.

I love a good sunrise or sunset. The colors are often a surprise, and if the clouds are involved there can be an amazing contrast between the light and dark above. Have you seen a colorful sky that caught your attention?

Many thanks, Dawn! When I saw that sunrise, “bruise” was the first word that came to mind. 🤔

Oh I love the title! Very creative!
You’re right, it really does look like a bruise.
I recently had a small one and it was interesting seeing the colors change!
I do prefee to watch it in the sky though, rather than my own body 🤭

Ps. I feel like your posts haven’t really showed up on my reader page lately. Or maybe I am blind. Anyhow, sorry about the lack of comments from my side!

LOL! Agreed, Andrea…I’ve had my share of bruised over the years and luckily, only a few looked like this.

No worries about the comments. WordPress seems to be weird about that sometimes.

Lovely poem. I was also hoping for a picture. In Virginia, I saw a gorgeous mountain sunset where to the sky was a hydrangea color (blue, pink, and violet) and in California, a Pacific Ocean sunset where both sky and water were rich shades of molten 🌈 sherbet. Equally gorgeous and rare.

Those both sound amazing, Pat. Each sunrise and sunset are so unique. It’s a shame we can’t capture them all.

That’s picture is beautiful, Richard ✨
That is a truly stunning, poetic description of the dawn, Richard! I love how you captured the sky—that feeling of the sun rising from a “battered, bruised” battle is wonderfully evocative. It sounds like a moment of rare, beautiful intensity!
