We had our first cold snap early last week, but it warmed up in time for my mother’s visit (which was nice). However, the warm weather has stuck around and it looks like it has confused the trees. Usually, by this time of year, the leaves on the trees have changed color and most of them have begun to fall.
It’s not terribly surprising. We had our first snowfall in over thirty years back in March, then a summer with temperatures up to 110, barely any rain for over six months, and now an unseasonably warm autumn. No wonder the trees are confused.
Leaves changing color
According to the plan
But the air is still warm
And they don’t understand
The days are getting shorter
The nights are getting long
But something has changed
The rhythm of nature’s song
From green to red, from red to orange
From orange to yellow, then gold
The leaves are doing what they should
But what happened to the cold?
I’m not sure when the leaves will begin to drop, but I do find it interesting to see them changing color when the temperature is in the 80s.
Any unseasonable weird weather where you are?

Darn global warming! We’re still in spring and it’s getting HOT already… I fear for our fire season in Dec-Feb! π΅βπ«
It seems to be affecting weather everywhere! Hope things don’t get too hot for you, Linda.
I think Mother Nature is confused…or drunk. Not sure which. But we’re now getting appropriate weather for November, like it or not! Love your poem, Richard! πππ
She may have dipped into the hard cider!
Thank you for the kind words, Dawn. π
Beautiful. Changes are taking place.
Thank you so much!
An excellent poem, Richard. Bravo.
I appreciate the kindness, my friend! Thank you.
Nice poem, Richard. Iβm glad your mother enjoyed nice weather for her visit. Happy Fall! Itβs my favorite season, although I like winter too β even snow. βοΈ
Thank you, MM! It was a lovely visit and the nature walks were wonderful.
Here’s hoping you get the fall season you’re expecting! π
Love the poem Richard. Global warming I fear is not being addressed quickly enough.
Many thanks, Wayne. And I agree. I think we need to strap ourselves in because it’s only going to get worse.
Unfortunately yes! I remember learning about global warming in the 80s and they are still not doing enough. Governments have had ample warning.
Our Virginia trees are similarly confused by the mix of warm and cooler air. Some of our local cherry trees (not the famous ones at the Tidal basin) have begun to blossom. I have noticed they have done this the last couple of years, it does not seem to affect reblossoming in early Spring.
Oh, off season blooms are interesting. I’m sure they look lovely (I’m partial to cherry blossoms). π
Hey Richard ! π·
That is so fascinating about your trees!
Here in India, we’re definitely feeling a confusing transition too. Weβre in mid-November and waiting for the proper chill to set in. The rhythm feels a little bit off everywhere latelyπ
Thank you for stopping by, Aparna! It seems the odd weather is just about everywhere these days. Hope you get your seasonal cool down soon. π
Thank you so much Richard β¨π
Great photo and prose Richard
Thank you, Sheree! I appreciate it.
It looks as if temperatures are finally beginning to fall to their seasonal average
Glad to hear that, Sheree.
Oh no! You donβt get to experience the proper Autumn season!
Iβd be so mad!
We are now in the phase where the evenings and mornings are cold, but the afternoons is quite warm. Curious to see when, and IF, the snow will fall this year!
The poem describes the changing of leaves perfectly however. And that probably is the best part about thos season π
Thank you for the kind words, Andrea. π
It’s been a weird weather year for us. They are predicting a warmer than usual winter for the area, but I’m hoping for a little bit of a cool down. Fingers crossed!
