An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

A Halloween Memory

Posted on 2025-10-29 By RB

I’ve always been a fan of a good scary story, particularly around Halloween. When I was a kid, I loved watching the hold Hammer horror movies and Twilight Zone reruns, but one of my favorites ways to get chills was listening to Alfred Hitchcock’s Ghost Stories for Young People. I had the vinyl album and would listen to it on the little record player in my bedroom.

I don’t know much about the album. It was released sometime in the early to mid 1960s. The stories on the first half of the album were written by an obscure voice actor (I have no idea how he and Hitchcock collaborated on this), while the ones on the other side were written by more known writers.

Listening to it as an adult is fun. The stories are obviously for kids, but they still have a bit of eeriness to them. Plus, Hitchcock’s dry delivery and wit is fun to listen to no matter how old you are.

I lost the album over the years, probably during a move, but I found a full recording on YouTube. I hope you’ll give it a listen and enjoy a little scare for Halloween!

My goodness… travelled back to the era where – The birds and The Haunting are playing in my head 😶‍🌫️
    Though I m a scaredy cat but still ..
It’s the kind of subtle scare that relies on atmosphere and delivery, not gore—the kind that makes your imagination do the heavy lifting.

I feel the same way, Aparna. I like a good spooky story rather than the slasher ones.

Thanks for the share, I look forward to listening to this. I’m a Hammer horror fan too. Absolutely love those Terence Fisher movies, my favourite being the Horror of Dracula (1958).

Great taste in movies, my friend! Horror of Dracula was one of the high points of that horror era. Plus, Christopher Lee in all is fanged glory!

Hope you enjoy the Hitchcock stories. Cheers!

Another internet win! I remember finding and entire kids christmas album I was able to share with my kids years ago. So awesome.

Scary stories are so much fun. Plus Hitchcock? Yes, please!

There was a book I had when I was a kid, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The cover was so terrifying that I kept it in a paper grocery bag like my school books. But I loved the stories! Recently I saw a new version of it at the bookstore and I shivered. Eeek!

Oh, that’s fantastic, Michelle! While the internet can be filled with all sorts of uselessness and negativity, it can also be a treasure trove of these nearly forgotten bits of our youth.

And I remember that book! I had a copy, as well. Now I have the urge to go look for it again. 👻

I am so *not* listening to that because I don’t like anything scary. For example, Jaws, Harry Potter and Doctor Who all scared me to death.

Oh, sorry to hear that, Sheree! Scary stories aren’t for everyone. 🙂
