My theme for the past week and a half has been an experiment with tape and angles. Triangles, really. I was seeing the triangles in my mind, and the colors, and wanted to see if I could recreate them on the canvas.
I also tried some different techniques. I applied colors with a very wet brush, with balled up paper towels, and even with an unused aquarium filter! I used to have several salt and freshwater aquariums in my home, but I broke them all down during COVID. I was able to pass along most of the supplies, although I kept some of the unused filters for occasions like this.
I also used different widths of tape and varied the color palettes to see what worked and what didn’t.
Here’s what I ended up with. Please let me know if you have a favorite. All were done on 12 x 16 canvas paper (click for a larger view).

Bravissimo!
Grazie!
So much fun to try new techniques. I think #1 is my favorite.
Thanks so much, Dawn! The colors really seem to pop on that canvas.
I love your fabulous abstract piece!
… all of them!
I’m honored and flattered, Luisa! Thank you!
Thanks a lot for your kind reply💜

This is a fantastic abstract piece! I’m really impressed by the creativity of your process—especially using a wet brush, balled-up paper towels, and an unused aquarium filter! That’s a true mixed-media approach. I’m drawn to the use of deep blues and purples with the contrasting pinks and greens. It creates great depth and movement.
Keep up the excellent work, and thanks for sharing your process!
Thanks so much, my friend! I enjoy using brushes, but sometimes an odd tool can give the piece an interesting texture or effect.
I appreciate the kind words. 🙂
The pleasure is all mine RB😇
I’d keep them as a set too – nice work Richard!
Many thanks, Sheree!
I would put 1, 2, 4 as a set… I just love all those colours!
They look amazing, Richard. Well done. 🙂
I appreciate it, mate!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed them. 🙂
You are welcome.
I keep the entire house clean and tidy… except for the aquarium stuff!
There is a bunch of things which could probably be used in space shuttles 🤭 but how cool that you were able to use it for the art! Nothing inspires me more than (my) fish.
I like 1 and 4 the most because of the calming effect of the horizontal brush stroke pattern, I guess that might be the way to describe it (?)
It just makes it feel serene.
2 and 3 feel more chaotic for some reason, which I am sure I can identify with some days of the week 🤭
But that’s great thing about art. One thing can soothe us one day, while the next day the opposite would attract!
Now that you mention it, maybe I was unconsciously inspired by my old fish tanks. Those triangles might be abstract fish! Hmmm…. 🧐
I’m glad you enjoyed these canvases, Andrea!
