An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

Poetry Moment – Indignant Chicken

Posted on 2025-09-10 By RB

So I had to take one of my hens to the vet this past weekend. She’d done something to her right eye and it was a bit swollen and had a little discharge. Because I was unprepared for the situation, the only thing I could find to transport her was a cloth grocery bag.

So while we were sitting in the waiting room, the hen, who we now refer to as Penelope, began poking her head out looking at one of us, then disappearing back inside the bag. Up, down, up, down…looking one way, then another. The impression I got was that she was indignant about being stuffed into a bag and unceremoniously shuttled to the veterinarian’s office.

When the doctor came in, she could barely get through the initial discussion because Penelope kept making her laugh.

Indignant chicken sitting in a cloth bag

on a chair in a examination room,

strange voices all around, strange sounds

echo off the tile floors and walls.

Curious, she lifts her head, popping up

for just a moment to look around.

Then poof, she ducks back down, only

to hear laughter from the people around her.

She pokes her head up again, looks, then

once again hides.

More laughter.

Again and again, the minutes pass, the

laughter gets louder.

She wonders what’s so funny, but

she’s not interested in taking another look.

Humans are too weird.

For what it’s worth, Penelope is doing well and the irritation appears to be responding to the ointment we have to smear on her eye.

Also, the vet and I agreed that Indignant Chicken would be a great name for a band.

What do you think?

RB

Ha! That’s a great name for a band! Penelope’s big adventure was quite entertaining for everyone. Good to hear her eye is on the mend.

Thanks, MM. She never stopped laying and it pretty much back to good health.
Now I need to get her into some music classes. I’m thinking she may do well with piano. 🙂

I appreciate it, Andrea. She’s looking so much better. And yes, she’s the best layer. Biggest eggs, and twice now she’s had double yolks in her eggs. I think that’s supposed to be good luck! 🥚

Well, if you are ever going to start an egg business, allow me to make a logo using her as my muse! She looks perfect in this picture 😄

This was a wonderful antidote to the latest lies from TACO, speaking of Chicken. Great name for a rock band too.

I appreciate the support for the band name. Now I just need to teach the hans how to play miniature instruments! 🙂

Maybe they would be better pecking the notes on keyboard rather than the brass section. 🐓🐔🐓🐔🐓

Agreed. The lack of lips may hinder their performance. 😂
