Saturday, September 6 is National Read a Book Day. Which seems weird to me because every day should be read a book day. At the very least, an entire month should be dedicated to reading. No one is going to get through a book in 24 hours. Well, not normal people. Book nerds will accept the challenge.
I think it’s also important to note that reading has many benefits. Reading regularly can:
- Expand your knowledge
- Improve your memory
- Help you sleep better (especially boring books)
- Reduce stress
- Build your concentration
- Improve your vocabulary
- Motivate you
- Increase empathy
And that’s only a partial list. Reading is one of those activities that doesn’t ask a lot of you, but rewards you in so many wonderful ways.
So do yourself a favor and read today. And tomorrow. And next week.
And don’t stop.
Do you read every day?

Every day IS read a book day! πππ I’m never without one, much easier now since I also read ebooks on my phone. Reading time during the day is essential to the health and well being of everyone around me, lol. Even my co-workers know to not interrupt my book at lunch time. π I’m only 18 books shy of my reading goal for this year, I think I’ll blow past it again, even though my TBR piles are threatening to bury me.
Fantastic, Dawn! Best of luck to you on hitting your reading goal. Although, I’m a little curious why your coworkers “know to not interrupt” you when you’re reading. π
As for your TBR pile, that’s just next year’s goal. Or maybe the one after that…. π
They know I’m a much nicer Dawn if I get a reading “break” at lunch. Unnecessary interruptions make for a more ‘feral’ afternoon attitude. π
My TBR pile assumes I’m immortal.π€£
Does that include blogs or real reading? LOL. I used to read a book on cataloging when I couldn’t fall asleep–it always did the trick. Hope I can find that book again.
LOL! Any reading is good reading, in my opinion. Blogs count, as well, my friend.
A book on cataloging…just knowing that exists is enough to make me drowsy! π
I do read every single day and if I get stuck into a good book, can easily read it in a day providing itβs not War & Peace proportions or in a foreign language. Iβm much slower reading books in non-mother tongue.
I feel the same way, Sheree. A great narrative can make me lose track of time.
π
Hah, totally agree!
Books should come with a warning: reading is addictive! π€
And even those who claim they donβt like readingβ¦ there are so many genres. There is something for everyone!
So very true, Andrea. I’ve known people who claimed to not like reading…until I found a genre that hooked them!
The great thing about books is that they allow us to travel through time and space.π
Absolutely, Luisa. They are like travel agents setting us up on amazing adventures!
