Every now and then, a song comes along that really connects with me. The music, the lyrics, the tone…they all seem to come together in a perfect mix. “Everlong”, by the Foo Fighters, is one of those rarities.
Released in 1997, the song has become a staple at Foo Fighters concerts and is arguably the band’s biggest hit.
Songwriter Dave Grohl wrote the song in 45 minutes, inspired by a woman he was seeing at the time. As he said in an interview with Kerrang! magazine: “That song’s about a girl that I’d fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly.”
To me, it’s a powerful and passionate love song, one that makes me stop what I’m doing whenever it plays to I can listen and sing along. The original version is a rock song (accompanied by a beautifully bizarre music video), but Grohl has also performed a fantastic acoustic version. I’ve posted the lyrics below (all rights belong to Grohl) along with both the rock and acoustic videos.
Hello
I’ve waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head, she sang
Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I’m over my head
Out of her head, she sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you’ve always been
Out of your head
Out of my head, I sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
Let me know what you think of the song and which version you prefer.

I love the acoustic version… But I am a very quiet person and any sounds that are too loud or busy drive me demented 😂 I couldn’t finish listening to the Rock version.
Oh, I get it. I used to enjoy the rock version, but the acoustic version has won me over.
Thanks for stopping by!
😅 you are welcome.
Acoustic version FTW!
Yeah, from a love song perspective, the acoustic version feels more heartfelt. 🙂
Oh! I love me some Foo Fighters! And this of course is an iconic song.
I didn’t know the back story though.
I think a muse can do so much for your inspiration!
Mine are definitely animals for my drawings. My fish, of course, because they are always nearby. But also just watching dogs from the window and animals on nature documentaries.
Animals just have so many personalities, cute quirks and facial expressions 😄
Great taste in music, my friend!
Agreed, the muse can strike at any time, from anywhere. Your illustrations definitely show where your inspiration comes from! Cheers!
Love the song but prefer the accoustic version.
That seems to be the popular choice, Sheree. Glad you enjoyed it!
I prefer the rock version. The two versions sound quite different, Richard.
I thought so, too, Pat. While the acoustic version feels more appropriate for a love song, I do love the video for the rock version. Thanks for stopping by!
