Learning how to paint is such a wonderful creative exercise. There are so many techniques to try and tools to use, plus the endless combinations of each, that I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to learn.
The past few days I’ve been playing around with taping my canvases. I have a couple of different sizes of painter’s tape and it’s been interesting learning what all I can do with it. The thicker pieces make nice solid lines that allow background colors to be easily seen, while the thin strips are easy to bend and curse, so I can spice things up a bit.
For this first practice canvas, I painted a simple black background, then used different sizes of tape to form straight lines. I then played around with the colors, working in a few pastel mixes to keep it light against the back lines. (click image for larger view)
The background of this next canvas is a mix of blue and white that I swiped back and forth to give it a texture effect. After it dried, I placed a few strips of tape, then added various shades of red (along with some sponged-on white). I like the contrasts on this one. (click image for larger view)
The third canvas is my favorite of the bunch. I did a mix of colors for the background (green, gold, yellow, and a deep red), then used thin strips of painter’s tape that I bent and curved to give it a sense of motion. I then added some other colors and used a balled up paper towel to add a gradient effect to each section. (click image for larger view)

Very good π―
Thank you!
The third is my favorite. π€
Because you have good taste, my friend! π
Thanks for stopping by!
Looks like a fun technique. Do you paint outside or inside?
Mostly inside. It’s been in the 90s here lately and humid. But I have a portable easel and pocket-sized paint tubes, so I’m ready when weather permits!
There’s actually a view from a nearby lake I want to paint in abstract. It’s been playing in my head lately and I think it’s calling me. π
I love them all. You’re quite the artist. The third is my favorite as well. Way cool. This would be an excellent technique for floor rugs.
Thank you so much, Devonne! I hadn’t even considered them as floor rug designs, but now that you mention it I think they’d look great like that!
I love your creations! All of them π
You are far too kind, Luisa!

Very good, Richard. Impressive.
Thank you so much, my friend. I appreciate the kind words.
You are multi-talented!
(And I like the final one the best too.)
I appreciate the encouragement, my friend!
I like the third one too! The colors and geometric pattern (not sure about terms) are simple yet complex. The Spanish colors of Cubism. I love Pablo Picasso. Especially his works that feature women. Abstract and complex. Very creative, the difference between the three. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, I’ll take that compliment, Sandi! Thanks taking the time to comment. π
Love the idea of painting the canvas black and then taping geometric shapes to keep that crisp black line. Very clever. Agree on liking number three best.
Many thanks, Pat!
What fun! I too like the third one.
I appreciate it, Sheree!
