Celebrating Towel Day!

Posted on 2025-05-252025-05-25 By RB

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book cover. For those who aren’t aware, Towel Day is an annual international celebration of the works of writer Douglas Adams. While not necessarily a prolific author (he once said, “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they pass by.”), Adams did write the iconic Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

In the trilogy of six books (yes, you read that correctly), one of the most important things a galactic hitchhiker can carry with them is a towel. Why, you ask? Let’s see what the Guide has to say:

“A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”

So, you see, a towel is arguably one of the most useful things in the universe, so it’s obviously something we should celebrate!

Although Adams is no longer with us, his legacy, and his hilarious books, live on. Remember, never travel without a towel and it doesn’t hurt to have a spare on hand. You never know when you might run into an inexperienced and towel-less hitchhiker out there.

A great blast from the past! I read it many moons ago, but maybe will revisit it. A towel sure does come in handy. I carry one in my car. 😄 Happy Towel Day!

I could smell and feel a grungy car towel. Useful of course, stiff and gross as they come. Cool post.

I have always been a fan of blanket. For comfort, warmth, protection.
And a towel might be even better, because it can keep you dry.
    Towels for president 💪

Agreed, Andrea! Blankets may be the better option depending on how much room there is in your luggage. 🙂
