An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

A Unique Writing Lesson

Posted on 2025-05-10 By RB

Kayleigh Sloan is one of those amazing teachers who can get the attention of students and help them understand the lesson. The first and second-grade teacher was helping her students understand the importance of descriptive writing when she decided to take the lesson one step further.

She had asked the kids to write instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? After they turned in their assignments, Sloan decided to read a few of the instructions out loud and follow them as they were written.

The results are hilarious.

It just goes to show the importance of descriptive writing!

Hahaha, this must have been so fun for the kids.
I used to write technical manuals and it was always the question how descriptive and detailed to be

I wish we had more teachers like this!
Oh, with technical writing that’s always the question. I used to write software documentation and tried to write as if I was explaining it to a five year old. 🙂

I’ve done this lesson before in class as well. It is a hoot and a half!
