Poetry Moment – Nocturnal Musings

Posted on 2025-04-29 By RB

I’ve always been a bit of an insomniac. Partly due to being a light sleeper, but also because it can be difficult to turn my mind off at night. So I lay in the dark and let my mind wander wherever it feels like traveling.

Nocturnal Musings

Sleep again escapes me as

my mind wanders to and fro

across flower-filled fields and

into the dark, cold depths of the ocean.

A few whispers of memory flash by, a

kaleidoscope of half-forgotten faces and

places I barely remember visiting.

I turn on my pillow to look out through the

half-closed blinds into a world of stars and

unfulfilled dreams and I wonder how

long before the alarm clock goes off.

Oddly, I get many of my creative ideas in this half-sleep state. Stories, poems, even ideas for paintings often come to me while I lay in the dark. Despite the lack of actual sleep, I still find it a relaxing state of mind.

Have you ever found inspiration in a dream?

RB

I often have inspiration in my dreams but I sleep for a solid 8 hours each night and like the dead. Nothing but nothing disturbs me.

Just like my other half…she sleeps through hurricanes!

I felt this one. I can sleep in a driving car, in the afternoon on the couch, but as soon as I am in bed at night… I feel a certain pressure, because everyone expects you to fall asleep as soon as you say “good night”.
But like you, I get a lot inspiration during the night.
I don’t often remember my dreams, but when I do it are nightmares. Could probably be good inspiration if I ever feel like writing a thriller 😅

Ah, a kindred spirit! Nice to know I’m not the only one awake at night. 🙂

I think it would be interesting if you wrote a thriller, but illustrated it with your wonderful characters! I imagine your shark would be a great protagonist!

Ohh, a plan is brewing now!
Maybe not an entire book, but definitely a post. 😅
Will link your post as the inspiration when done !
