An Exercise in Self-Indulgence

Poetry Moment – Enough Already

Posted on 2025-04-18 By RB

We had a mass shooting at a college campus just down the street from where I live. No one I know was killed or injured, but it’s still sobering to have this happen so close.

Enough Already

How much blood must be shed

before something is done?

How many more lives must be lost

and fallen before a gun?

Why do we condone these events

instead of changing course?

With needless thoughts and prayers

instead of sadness and remorse.

So many cling to their guns

because it makes them feel tough.

But where do we draw the line

and say, enough is enough?

I feel like I want to rant and rave about gun violence in the U.S., but it falls on deaf ears. No one wants to take a stand and change things. Sadly, it’s only going to get worse.

Apologies for the morose post today.

RB

I’m an inner city teacher whose school is ripe for this kind of thing. We have incarcerated kids and former students in prisons for shootings or murders now. Its always in the back of our minds, and threats come in regularly.

It saddens me that faculty and students have to always be on guard for these situations. The occasional schoolyard bully had turned into the occasional school shooter.

My hat is so off to you and those like you, who deal with terrifying conditions every day, still patiently trying to bring a little light to reluctant minds. Bright blessings on your work, my dear.

As a European, I really don’t understand the gun policy in the US. People can do all kinds of things in a moment of madness.
I’m so sorry it happened near you. Must have been a shock.
I felt the emotions through the poem!

      Thank you, Andrea.
      As a U.S. native, I don’t understand it, either.
      Thanks for commenting.

Once again 47 said he was sorry and this was terrible but once again refused to do anything about it because of Second amendment rights. Grrrr 😭.😱🤯🙏

I don’t think we’ll ever see serious change in this area until someone who has the power to make change is affected directly. Until then, their attitude is “not my problem.”

Thank you, Luisa. My words don’t do justice to my emotions at the moment.
