One of the things I’ve been practicing lately is painting figures. Nothing too detailed or sophisticated, of course. Just simple figures in different poses. I picked up the technique from Robert Burridge on YouTube. He’s been one of the biggest influences on my acrylic painting journey.
Basically, I take a nice, fat round brush, a splotch of paint on some palette paper, and make a mess on the practice canvas. Initially, I was only painting figures, simple black silhouettes. But then I thought, why not take it a little further and add some color, some texture, a bit of contrast.
What I ended up with isn’t fine art by any stretch of the imagination, but I think some of the figures turned out well. I see people there, not just a splash of paint on paper. Adding the colors and shadows seems to bring them to life.
I still need to work on the technique a bit more, but I want to start adding figures to some of my paintings. Maybe a city scene, a walk in the woods on an autumn afternoon, or maybe just add some figures to an abstract to give it an interesting focal point.
I’ve become passionate about my painting and plan to expand further afield with techniques, tools, and formats. I think I’m finally getting the hang of this!

Love your figures, Richard! They are very good and have an interesting vibe to them. Thanks for sharing them with us. I want to try my hand at painting figures like yours, but need to buy new paint, brushes and such. One of these days it will happen.
Thanks, MM! I’m looking forward to seeing your work soon (don’t keep your audience waiting!). 🙂
This is unsettlingly beautiful
Many thanks, my friend.
Your paintings look good. Have you painted in the past, or is this your first time?
Thanks, mate! I started experimenting with acrylics about two years ago. Something I always wanted to try, but Covid gave me an excuse to follow through.
I also see the people there …
The colors and shadows make them feel real
And your ideas for future paintings sound amazing, specially the autumn walk
I love that a lot
Your art is telling a story. Keep going ….
Best wishes, Richard!
Thank you so much, Roksana! I appreciate your encouragement.
Fabulous and with just a few brush strokes
Many thanks, Sheree. I was pleasantly surprised, myself! 🙂
Richard, I really liked the example you provided. Go for it!
Thanks so much, Pat!
