Arguably one of the more famous singer-songwriters, Bruce Springsteen had an amazing run of albums in the 1970s. Considered his breakthrough album, Born to Run spawned several radio staples. However, the opening track, “Thunder Road”, is the one that stays in regular rotation on my main playlist.
The studio version of the song starts slow and melodic, then slowly builds to a crescendo of high-octane, New Jersey rock. But it’s the lyrics that initially captured my attention. I was probably around ten years old when I first listened to this song on vinyl, reading the lyric sheet that came with the album and visualizing the scene Springsteen laid out with his words. I’ll admit, I was too young then to fully understand and appreciate what he was singing about, but the mystery was part of the allure.
It’s basically a love song, a young man calling on a young woman named Mary. In the simplest terms, he acknowledges that there isn’t much of a future for them now that they’ve graduated high school and he offers to take her away to find the Promised Land.
To me, the lyrics flowed so beautifully, not only illustrating the frustration and longing of youth but also the hopes and dreams we chase at that time in our lives. I think there’s a heavy Dylan influence on the words, poetic metaphors, and allusions to love and pain.
While the studio version is the first version I heard, and it is probably the one most people are familiar with, there is, in my opinion, a far superior cut. This is from a concert and the Hammersmith Odeon in London back in 1975. The reason I love this version so much is that it’s just Springsteen, a piano, and a harmonica. Roy Bittan, a long-time collaborator, is the one on the ivories. Springsteen takes center stage here, his voice worn from the relentless touring, the emotion raw and palatable.
I hope you’ll give it a listen and let me know what you think. I’ve also posted the lyrics below so you can see the beauty of the words. Enjoy!
The screen door slams
Mary’s dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that’s me and I want you only
Don’t turn me home again
I just can’t face myself alone again
Don’t run back inside
darling you know just what I’m here for
So you’re scared and you’re thinking
That maybe we ain’t that young anymore
Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night
You ain’t a beauty but hey you’re all right
Oh and that’s all right with me
You can hide ‘neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I’m no hero
That’s understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night’s busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven’s waiting on down the tracks
Oh come take my hand
We’re riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it’s late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight, take hold
Thunder Road
Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car’s out back
If you’re ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door’s open but the ride ain’t free
And I know you’re lonely
For words that I ain’t spoken
But tonight we’ll be free
All the promises’ll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they’re gone on the wind
So Mary climb in
It’s a town full of losers
And I’m pulling out of here to win.
